When I started this blog a year ago, my plan was to share all of the projects we’ve been working on around our house, and hopefully inspire others who are wanting to improve their own homes. My goal was and still is to teach others how to create their dream home.
As I look back over the last year, I realize that I haven’t shared as much about our home as I have wanted to. Part of it is because we’ve been so busy that I haven’t had the time to work on projects like I thought I would. But I think the biggest reason is that I’ve felt like I had to wait until I had everything perfect before I could share it.
I love looking at what other home bloggers are doing and getting inspiration from their projects. I could spend hours browsing through their beautiful photos on Instagram. But at the same time, I think looking at some of these gorgeous home makeovers has made me feel like I shouldn’t share mine until everything is perfect.
This year, I came to two realizations. One – if I waited until I had everything perfect, nothing would ever get shared. Two – if my goal is to teach others how to create their dream home, I should be sharing my progress as well. I know my readers would appreciate seeing my home as it is now, what I’m struggling with, and how I’m making it my own, not just the end result.
So what does that mean for the blog? Well, this year I hope to share many more home projects with you. I’ll still be sharing my favorite recipes, home organization tips, and fun DIYs – all of those things are part of what makes a house a home – but you can also expect to see much more about our house itself. I’ll share project plans and ideas, room makeovers, decor ideas, etc. And I promise I won’t keep you waiting until everything is perfect!
So with that being said, today I’d like to share with you our home improvement plans for 2018. It’s an ambitious list and who knows if we will actually get to everything this year, but we will certainly try our best!
1. Pantry Makeover
I’ve been saying it since day one in our new home, but mark my words, this pantry WILL be beautiful by the end of 2018! I’ve dreamed about having a gorgeous walk-in pantry for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, due to the layout of our home, I didn’t get the walk-in pantry I had always dreamed of, but I can still make the most of the one I have!
Yikes! First of all, it is obviously in need of some serious organization. I’m envisioning these shelves filled with glass jars and pretty labels, organized in a way that I can easily find whatever I’m looking for. I also want to work on keeping a stocked supply of all of my staple ingredients and baking essentials, so that I don’t have to run to the grocery store every time I get a craving for homemade chili or chocolate chip cookies.
To beautify this pantry of mine, I want to take out the shelves and replace them with stained wood ones. I also want to do something with the walls – maybe shiplap? Wallpaper? I haven’t decided yet. I’ll keep browsing beautiful pantries on Pinterest for now.
2. Basement Bathroom
This is probably going to be our biggest project of the year. Our basement is currently unfinished, but my husband and I have big plans for it. We already have plumbing set up for a bathroom in this spot. We’re hosting an event at our house at the end of March, and it would be totally amazing to have this bathroom done by then, but that’s a pretty ambitious goal. I won’t get my hopes up for that just yet.
As you can see, we are starting from scratch here. Right now we are in the stage of gathering ideas. I’m super in love with this black and white porcelain tile from Home Depot and would love to incorporate that into this bathroom. For the walls, we will probably do some wainscoting with paint or wallpaper. We would also like to put in a clawfoot tub.
That’s all I have for my bathroom ideas right now. I seriously cannot wait to see how this room comes together! I’m having so much fun getting ideas for it, maybe even more fun than the rest of our house. I think I’m more relaxed about what goes in the basement, so I feel more free to experiment and try new styles that I would have been too scared to try in the main part of the house. Does that make sense? Maybe I’m just weird.
3. Dining Room Makeover
This room isn’t a top priority, but what I want to do should be fairly simple, so maybe it will happen this year. I’m not completely 100% in love with the blue walls we have in our dining room. By the time we got to this point in the building process, I was feeling so frazzled after making 10,000 different decisions, and I was just anxious to get in the house. That being said, I sort of rushed when choosing some of the paint colors, this being one of them. It’s a soft blue and really is a very pretty color, but I’m just not sure it’s what I want for our dining room.
I really, really love this high contrast dining room that Lauren at Bless’er House did. I could totally envision a bold dark gray with some wainscoting, crown moulding, and fresh new window treatments in our dining room. Plus, we still need chairs. My husband built us this huge beautiful table and it deserves beautiful chairs to go with it. Lately we’ve been using folding chairs that we brought up from the basement, and they have got to go!
This picture was taken just after our house was finished, but it seems to be the only photo of the front exterior that I have right now without snow on the ground. We do have grass now, but otherwise we have done zero landscaping since we moved in. This spring, I hope to put an end to the sad patch of dirt that sits between our house and the cement walkway and fill it with lush greenery and colorful flowers. I would also like to spruce up the front porch by hanging some flower baskets and getting a couple of rocking chairs to enjoy on those long summer days.
Last summer, our main exterior project was building a huge deck, which I am completely in love with! I cannot wait to enjoy it this year! If money allows, I would love to buy a couple of lounge chairs for sunbathing out on the deck. Now I just need a pool to cool off in afterward!
5. Window Trim
This one will be really easy, so it’s going on the list. I just want to add decorative trim around our windows. To me they feel so bare without it, and I think adding it is going to make a big difference. I’m going to start with this big window in our master bedroom and go from there. I think it’s just what these windows need!
6. Kitchen Backsplash
I don’t know if this one will make it in 2018 or not, but I would love to finally get my kitchen backsplash done! I’m at least going to spend some time looking at samples and pricing out different options. I’ve had a hard time deciding what exactly I want in this kitchen.
For a long time I assumed I would do some kind of white subway tile, either plain white or maybe with some slight marbling. But then recently I came across this beautiful brick backsplash on Decor Gold Designs and I fell head over heels in love with it! I feel like I could totally envision this brick in our kitchen. What do you think?
On a somewhat related note, I’d also like to invest in some nice white dishes for our glass cabinets. I currently have multi-colored Fiestaware, which I love, but I’d like to have something a little more elegant to display in the glass cabinets. That means I’ll need to figure out a storage place for those colored dishes as well.
That’s all I have for now. There are still many other projects we have in mind for our home, but I think this is a good list for 2018.
I’ll be sure to share these projects on the blog as I check them off the list. Now that I’ve put these ideas out there, I sure hope I can find the time and energy to get them all done! Wish me luck!
